DiNovo Mini on OSX Mini Review

Posted by Dave in September 26th 2008

I’ve read alot of reviews on the DiNovo Mini but none really pertained to OSX because of its unsupportedness from Logitech. I did find alot of people who said it worked so I decided to buy it anyway. I have a 2.0 C2D MacBook hooked up to my 60″ Sony KDSR60XBR1 Television. This is the main reason I wanted to get this mostly for casual browsing and for Plex navigation. My final verdect, IT WORKS AWESOME! Was simple to pair via bluetooth, click to discover devices, hit the big red connect on the bottom of the DiNovo Mini enter in some numbers, and we’re paired! The Keyboard Setup Assistant comes up asking you to choose keys and now you’re ready! Click to read the rest!! …click here to read more

4 Steps to Fix Wall Street from Mr. Newt!

Posted by Dave in September 24th 2008

Four reform steps will have capital flowing with no government bureaucracy and
no taxpayer burden.

First, suspend the mark-to-market rule which is
insanely driving companies to unnecessary bankruptcy. If short selling can be
suspended on 799 stocks (an arbitrary number and a warning of the rule by
bureaucrats which is coming under the Paulson plan), the mark-to-market rule can
be suspended for six months and then replaced with a more accurate three year
rolling average mark-to-market.

Second, repeal Sarbanes-Oxley. It failed
with Freddy Mac. It failed with Fannie Mae. It failed with Bear Stearns. It
failed with Lehman Brothers. It failed with AIG. It is crippling our
entrepreneurial economy. I spent three days this week in Silicon Valley.
Everyone agreed Sarbanes-Oxley was crippling the economy. One firm told me they
would bring more than 20 companies public in the next year if the law was
repealed. Its Sarbanes-Oxley’s $3 million per startup annual accounting fee that
is keeping these companies private.

Third, match our competitors in
China and Singapore by going to a zero capital gains tax. Private capital will
flood into Wall Street with zero capital gains and it will come at no cost to
the taxpayer. Even if you believe in a static analytical model in which lower
capital gains taxes mean lower revenues for the Treasury, a zero capital gains
tax costs much less than the Paulson plan. And if you believe in a historic
model (as I do), a zero capital gains tax would lead to a dramatic increase in
federal revenue through a larger, more competitive and more prosperous economy.

Fourth, immediately pass an “all of the above” energy plan designed to
bring home $500 billion of the $700 billion a year we are sending overseas. With
that much energy income the American economy would boom and government revenues
would grow

Blackberry Bold Sept 15 on AT&T for $199

Posted by Dave in August 15th 2008

Blackberry Bold

Blackberry Bold

Found this BusinessWeek article that mentions the following:

AT&T Inc. says it will be the exclusive U.S. carrier for the
Bold, as it is for the iPhone. An AT&T spokesman declined to say
Thursday when the company will release it.

But Peter
Misek, an analyst with Canaccord Adams, said he expects AT&T to
start selling it on Sept. 15
and Rogers Communications in Canada to
release it on Aug. 18.

And this

Misek said the Bold will cost about $200 in the United States depending on the contract.

According
to T-Mobile web site in Germany the cost of the phone without a service
plan is 459.95 euros, or about $680. With a plan, it is 129.95 euros,
or about $190.

YAY I can’t wait!!!

Why Didn’t Apple just Choose Google?

Posted by Dave in August 5th 2008

MobileMe

We all know the trouble Apple has has with the mobile me launch. The still shaky service has been through the wringer. This post on GigaOM, along with this post on TechCrunch makes me think, why didn’t apple just choose google to do this. Google has a proven infrastructure, apple could have offered it for free or at a lower price point and they would have avoided all the embarrassment that went along with the launch. One more thing is that everyone pretty much already had a gafyd or gmail account already it would have been simple. I could go on and on about this but that would make my blog interesting and then people would expect that all the time. Just think about this and wonder with me and feel free to leave a comment.

Google Calendar now supports CalDAV

Posted by Dave in July 28th 2008

iCal
If this doesn’t make sense to you that’s fine I understand. Here is another way to put it, You can now sync google calendar to iCal over the web, without any 3rd party apps. Let me quote TUAW:

Google has just quietly introduced CalDAV support to Google Calendar. CalDAV is the protocol that iCal uses to transmit data over the web. Although some other mail and calendar programs support CalDAV, right now Google Calendar is only compatible with iCal. Finally, iCal and Google Calendar can sync without having to use third party programs!

Instructions here

Thanks TUAW!

There is no default application specified to open the document “Desktop”

Posted by Dave in July 21st 2008

So I had this issue recently with my macbook where I couldn’t click on the desktop on the left side in Finder. I also could not see any other icons besides the default harddrive icons. Here is the fix that worked for me:

1. Log out your user, and log in as another user. Open the Terminal.
2. Type ‘su userName’ with your user’s short name as userName. Enter the appropriate password as prompted.
3. Type ‘cd ~’ and return.
4. Type ‘mkdir temp’ and return
5. Type ‘mv Desktop/* temp’. That should move all the items from your Desktop folder to a temporary folder.
6. Type ‘ls temp’. This should show all the files that used to be on the Desktop — makes sure the move command worked properly.
7. Type ‘rm -Rf Desktop’
8. Type ‘mkdir Desktop’
9. Type ‘mv temp/* Desktop’
10. Type ‘ls Desktop’. That should show all the files, back where they’re supposed to be
11. Type ‘rm -Rf temp’ to get rid of the temp folder.
12. Type ‘chmod -R 700 Desktop’. Otherwise, everyone will be able to
read the files in that folder, because those are the default
permissions for your home dir.

This wasn’t an easy answer to find!!

Timemachine Restore FROM NAS

Posted by Dave in July 18th 2008

I’ve found lots of places to turn on TimeMachine backing up to a NAS (Network Storage Drive), but I couldn’t find any that told me how to restore after using the hack. Until Now! I haven’t tried these but the poster says they work:

If you are trying to do a full restore back onto your mac after the hd
failed, you use the Time Machine backup in concert with your Leopard
Install Disk.

1) Boot the Leopard Install Disk
2) Select Terminal from Utilities
3) ping your NAS box to make sure you have connectivity
4) Create a mount point for your NAS box, i.e “mkdir /Volumes/nas”
5) Mount your backup drive manually
For AFP, use “mount_afp afp://username:password@NAS_IP_ADDRESS/NAS_volume_name /Volumes/nas”
Presumably if you use Samba, you could mount with mount_smbfs instead. I use AFP and the above syntax worked.
6) Make sure the sparsebundle file mentioned above is in the root directory: “ls /Volumes/nas”
7) Exit terminal, “exit”
8) Select “Restore from Backup disk” from the Utilities (?) menu and you should see your backup listed
