I search and searched for how to do this but most of the steps were using the most awesome and free asterisk server but none on how to do it on your corporate network (Which I don’t advise but well what the hell, I am not responsible if you get in trouble). I came across this blog like 10 pages in on google and well from 2005, but it still applied.

Here are the steps:

1. You’ll need a tftp server either on windows on *nix, you can find many on google like this one.
2. Go to Settings -> Network Configuration
3. Hit * * #. Nothing will happen, but you’ve just made the settings editable.
4. Find the Alternate TFTP setting. On my phone it’s #32. Set it to “Yes” by hitting the appropriate soft button.
5. Go back up to the “TFTP Server 1? setting (#8 on my phone), and hit the “Edit” soft button
Write down the current TFTP server. We’ll need it later, and you should probably store it in a safe place, just in case something dies sometime down the road.
6. Type in your new TFTP server IP.
7. Save the changes.

The phone will reboot, this is key, you need to watch your tftp server for what files the phone is requesting. For me it was a few xml files you’ll need to get these files from your original tftp server. Once you have all the files reboot the phone again, t the phone will ask for files that aren’t on either server that’s fine. Edit your ringlist.xml and add your ring tones, the cisco format is very specific so I used sox and this command sox -t wav ring.wav -t raw -r 8000 -U -b -c 1 ring.raw resample -ql this seemed to produce the best results.

Now you’re all set with custom rings on your office phone, if needed you can always use the same steps to go back to your official tftp server.

Today I read this article that states Radio Shack is going to start selling video games and consoles. This article prompted me to write this.

Radio Shack doesn’t need to sell consoles or video games, there are other retailers that do this and do it much better. Radio Shack needs to return to the core of what they always did best PARTS. When even you needed any type of resistor or transistor or and obscure RS-232 cable, Radio Shack was THE place to go. So, lets translate this to today terms. They should continue to sell the same parts they always have but step it up. Radio Shack should sell COMPUTER PARTS! Yes, motherboards, cases, CPU’s, fans, RAM. In the perfect world Radio Shack would form some sort of partnership with NewEgg to become the MEGASUPPLIER of all things related to a DIY computer builder. Fry’s sells motherboards and CPU’s with success but we all don’t have access to a Fry’s. The only other option is the local computer store which can’t compete with NewEgg’s prices.

Here is how I picture some processes:

1. I can buy from NewEgg just like I always have, and have it shipped to my house.

2. I could buy from NewEgg and have it shipped to my local Radio Shack to pick up. (Which used to be much closer but they closed ALOT of stores)

3. I could goto any Radio Shack and pick up a new motherboard same day (They should stock a variety of parts in store for this reason)

4. I could take my shipment from #1 to any Radio Shack for RMA, this would speed the process and in the end provides better customer service.

These are just a few examples but this seems like a no brainer. Rather then selling, DirecTV, MSN PC’s or remote controlled cars, this is what you need to focus on. Radio Shack, NO ONE IS DOING THIS. It is very hard to find PC parts locally if at all, you always have to do mail order/online or if you’re lucky enough to have a local computer store that has what you need.

I hope someone at Radio Shack reads this and makes some changes or they will continue to lose money as they have for the past 4 quarters.
